Woodmere welcomes Matthew J. Palczynski and acquires work by Modernist painter Arthur B. Carles

Woodmere Art Museum welcomes Matthew J. Palczynski as its new curator. Palczynski, who most recently held the position of Staff Lecturer for Western Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, received his Ph.D. from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art with a dissertation on the Abstract Expressionist painter Mark Rothko. He specializes in art of the 20th and 21st centuries, and continues to teach courses in relation to this period at Tyler.

“We had over 80 candidates for the position,” says William R. Valerio, the Patricia Van Burgh Allison Director and CEO of Woodmere Art Museum, “and Matt was the best fit for Woodmere. His superlative credentials as an art historian, coupled with his experience in museum education will support Woodmere’s commitment to making connections between our visitors and our great collections of the art of Philadelphia.”

“This is a city with a long history of art and a thriving art scene,” says Palczynski. “More and more young artists are choosing to live and work in Philadelphia, and I am thrilled to be part of an institution that is dedicated specifically to exploring and interpreting this new vitality. At the same time, there are so many established artists in the region, and I look forward to giving these artists the greater attention they deserve.”

Palczynski will oversee the Chestnut Hill institution’s collection, which spans four centuries of Philadelphia art, representing a living history of Philadelphia’s artists, past and present. Much of Woodmere’s collection is now available online at the newly launched woodmerecollection.org. The collections database offers an interactive forum where ideas, knowledge and stories can be shared.

Continually adding to its collection, Woodmere is also pleased to announce the acquisition of Woman with Red Hair, a stunning Modernist portrait by American painter Arthur B. Carles (1882 – 1952). This is the second Carles acquisition for the Museum, which added Abstract Bouquet to its collection last fall, when it was featured in the exhibition Mary G.L. Hood and Philadelphia Modernism. Born in Philadelphia, Carles also spent time in Paris, where he developed a European Avant Garde style influenced by the painterly school of Fauvism and the work of Henri Matisse. Woman with Red Hair, believed to have been painted in Paris in 1922, is an excellent example of Carles’ interest in color play — his use of green and purple in his model’s skin tone becomes striking against the dominating vibrant red palette.

“Woman with Red Hair is the most sensual, sensuously painted and fully developed portrait Carles painted of his French red-headed model Angele,” says art historian Barbara Wolanin. “Rather than flattening the figure into an abstract composition, Carles artfully caught his model’s features in near-profile, showing her drape sliding suggestively off her shoulder. I am delighted that Woman with Red Hair is now part of Woodmere Art Museum, where the public will be able to share Carles’ delight in his model and in capturing her with color.”

The painting, a gift of Linda and James Ries in memory of Rose Ries in 2011, was exhibited at Woodmere in 2000 and has also been shown at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Woodmere owns a print by Carles of the same model, given to the collection by June and Perry Ottenberg. Carles lived and worked in his home on Evergreen Avenue in Chestnut Hill. “This is a wonderfully sensual painting that expands Woodmere’s ability to tell the story of Philadelphia art,” says Valerio. “This is a major work of art.”

Woodmere Art Museum invites kids of all ages to experience family-friendly fall programs beginning in September. Woodmere welcomes the return of the large-scale landscape hay maze to the front lawn for the months of September and October. This year’s maze, titled Owl’s Eye, is a labyrinth of concentric circles made with bales of hay, evoking the shape of an owl’s eye. The fall season also includes two new children’s exhibitions featuring artwork by local students, an art installation in the museum’s new Children’s Garden and Friday Night Family Happenings through December. Family Events
The hay maze Owl’s Eye will open to the public onSeptember 9. From 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., visitors are invited to run the maze and enjoy flashlight tours, seek and find games, art making, face painting, food, and much more. Owl’s Eye creator Peter Everett Brown was the winner of Woodmere’s summer design competition. Brown, who lives in Fort Washington, is a project designer and project manager at the architectural firm Lenhardt Rodgers. The installation is geared towards families and children ages 4-11. The maze will be open to visitors through October 30 on Fridays (6 p.m. – 8 p.m.), Saturdays (10 a.m. – 6 p.m.) and Sundays (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.). Admission is $8 per child ($6 members) or $20 for families of three or more.

On select Friday evenings in September through December, Woodmere invites families to spend an evening at the museum with Fall Friday Night Family Happenings, a series of art-making activities for children ages 4-11. The first activities include Moustache Making (September 9), Pinwheels for Peace (September 16) and The Greatest Pumpkin Ever (October 21). The Friday family programming will run in conjunction with Friday Night Jazz at Woodmere, the museum’s popular jazz series. Museumgoers and music lovers are invited to stroll Woodmere’s galleries, enjoy wine and cheese, and hear live jazz performances while the kids participate in the family programs.

Children’s Exhibitions
Local students from Edgewood Elementary School, Quarry Hill Elementary School and Pennsbury High School will exhibit their work in Impressions, a new exhibition on display in Woodmere’s Helen Millard Children’s Gallery from September 11 – October 23.The exhibit highlights how students use elements and principles of design to illustrate their surroundings.

The winter months will bring a second children’s exhibition – Into the Atmosphere: Kids Care 18, on display November 6 – December 18. Inspired by space and stars, Into the Atmosphere features artwork created by hundreds of children around the region, made as holiday gifts. The exhibition marks the museum’s 18th annual Kids Care collaboration with WXPN’s 88.5 FM’s Kids Corner with Kathy O’Connell.

The Helen Millard Children’s Gallery is a permanent exhibition space dedicated to exhibiting artwork by and for young people. All exhibitions in the gallery, which first opened in 1986, are installed in a professional manner, providing both student participants and visitors a one-of-a-kind museum experience.

Woodmere will also introduce a new Children’s Garden on the grounds of the museum, located beside the George D. Widener Studio building, a converted carriage house used for year-round art instruction. For six years, Woodmere’s Summer Arts Community Programhas collaborated with children from differing ages, ethnicities and neighborhoods to construct a major work of art. The 2011 project Monsters, Myths, and Magic brought together 29 children and young adults, ages 8-22, for two weeks, to create mythical creatures and monsters. Under the direction of Woodmere educator and artist Hildy Tow students designed and built fanciful wooden creatures, a giant bird’s nest, jeweled stepping stones, birds, birdhouses and butterflies, to be installed amongst the flower beds in the Children’s Garden. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, September 18 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Building the House of Wisdom: A Closer Look at Violet Oakley

In 1911, Violet Oakley (1874 – 1961) created a mural cycle, The Building of the House of Wisdom, for the central hall of the mansion of Charlton Yarnall at 17th and Locust Streets in Philadelphia. The murals were painted on canvas shapes that were inserted into the architectural structure.

When the Yarnall House was remodeled in the early 1970s, the murals were rescued and brought to Woodmere by Edith Emerson, the Museum’s first director and Oakley’s partner. Unfortunately, the cut glass dome that Oakley designed to crown the hall was destroyed.

Three massive, semi-circular lunettes represent the ages of man from childhood through youth and maturity. Six octagonal panels were set into the arches over the lunettes, and they tell the stories of The Life of Hercules and American Invention. Pendentives, which connected the lunettes to the dome, show the advance of architecture through the ages. One of the four pendentives was not taken by Emerson back to Woodmere.

The Building of the House of Wisdom is a metaphor from the Old Testament’s Book of Proverbs that describes how an individual can achieve health, wealth, and harmony with the world. Oakley believed that artists should communicate universal truths, and she sought to apply the humanistic ideals of the Italian Renaissance to modern life. She created The Building of the House of Wisdom after spending time in Rome and drew upon the lofty models of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and Raphael’s Stanze.

This Spring 2011 exhibition was the first time The Building of the House of Wisdom had been exhibited in its entirety after being conserved in 2007 by Woodmere, thanks to a grant from the William Penn Foundation. This exhibition will be on display again September 25, 2011.

The first lunette is called The Child and Tradition. At its center, seated on the knees of two powerful women, a small child symbolizes mankind in its infancy. Situated between the two archetypal female presences of mother and nurse, the child is safe to dream about the great figures of history and literature to which they have introduced him. In his imagination, historical luminaries populate the stairway of his home: Confucius, the author of the Analects (lower left); Solomon, the author of the Book of Proverbs, holding a chest of treasure (left); Cicero (lower right); and Dante, preceded by his courtly, idealized love, Beatrice (right). The scene takes place in a stairwell made using post and lintel construction, the first architectural doorway. The child must climb the stairs to reach the next level of maturity, symbolized in the lunette Youth and the Arts.

Roofing and Climate Control Replacement Project

As part of the roofing and climate control replacement project at Woodmere, all of the 1987 vintage equipment, including a 40-ton air handler and ductwork, have been removed from the roof of the museum. This equipment provided conditioned air to the exhibition galleries and had reached the end of its useful life.

Prior to demolition, because the roof area over the collection storage facility would be affected, the museum’s collection was moved into several exhibition galleries. These galleries have been equipped with temporary portable climate control equipment, which will provide conditioned air to the collection until the roof over the storage facility has been replaced. Temporary air conditioning units have also been installed in the Corridor, Founder’s, and Parlor Galleries to provide an environment that permits artwork to remain in place and allow public access. All of the Climate Control equipment will be replaced, with the exception of the boilers. During that time, the Museum admission will be free.

The roof project is not simply a replacement, but a redesign. Dan McCoubrey of Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates has redesigned what was once a flat roof with longstanding pooling problems. The new roof will have increased pitch to ensure that it sheds water quickly and completely. Roof runoff will be directed into French Drains, which with a civil engineer’s stamp, will reduce stormwater billing.

Spotlight: Instructor Paul DuSold

Paul DuSold is an instructor for Woodmere Art Museum's classes and is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art.

Paul has painted portraits for Pennsylvania Hospital, The Federal reserve bank of Philadelphia, Thomas Jefferson University as well as many other institutions and private commissions. He is represented by Gross McCleaf gallery in Philadelphia.

This alla prima landscape class is for painters of all levels. The class will meet at several different locations, including Valley Green, Morris Arboretum and the Schuylkill River. Demonstrations will be given in oils, but students are welcome to work in other media as well. Emphasis will be on painting quickly and expressively. Students will be instructed in seeing the landscape in broad terms in order to think about composition and make rapid decisions about mixing color.

Spotlight: Our intern Lizzi shares her experience at Woodmere

Hi, my name is Lizzi. I have been an intern at the Woodmere Art Museum for two years now. I thought I’d tell you about how I came to work here and my insider impressions as a Woodmere first timer with a photo tour of my typical Wednesday journey to and around the museum. Enjoy!

Let’s start off close to my first destination: The Crefeld School. I’ve been attending Crefeld since the start of my sophomore year and I’ll be graduating this June. Every student at Crefeld must complete two hours of mandatory community service work every week in order to graduate. I chose to contact Woodmere to see if there was anything I could do to help since it is undoubtedly an important part of the Chestnut Hill community.

I walked from Crefeld Street to Germantown Avenue, past the Chestnut Hill Presbyterian Church and its towering steeple

Woodmere is important to me because I’ve always had a passion for art, both as a creator and a spectator and it’s nice to have a small community art museum that has both variety and quality to explore without having to spend a whole day speed walking to see what there is to see.

Getting a little closer now, I pass this “barely clad” bear every week as he keeps watch over Norwood Academy.

It’s always a little intimidating going into a professional environment when you don’t even have a high school diploma. I was pretty much expecting dismal results. As a junior I was used to being talked down to and disrespected by adults and authority figures. But upon arrival to the Woodmere, all of my presumptions were quickly eradicated. Not only was I appreciated, I was respected and treated like part of the team, something incredibly special for someone my age.

My first impression of the Museum was that it was completely different from any I’d visited before. As you walk through the doors it really feels like a house of art as opposed to a facility of stuffiness (an aura I’d encountered numerous times upon school trips to museums of all kinds.) No, there are no snobs to be found here. In fact, the staff is kind, helpful, and all seem to genuinely love art as well as contribute towards the success of the museum as a whole. Which makes the Woodmere all that more lovable.

My favorite room, the open space and natural lighting create a welcoming environment to wander and take in the art.

My time here has definitely earned me a whole new respect for art, small art museums, and the community of staff and volunteers working behind the scenes (as well as making me pretty handy with a spreadsheet). The Woodmere has easily become my favorite destination in Chestnut Hill and even as I prepare to leave for college, the museum and its inhabitants have a special warm fuzzy spot reserved in my mind. So I invite you to continue your photo exploration of the little house of art I’ve become a part of. Feel free to stop by and make yourself at home.

Chestnut Hill House Evolves into a Home for Art

Some people have called it the “Addam’s House” because it resembles the house in the television show The Addams Family. Actually, no one knows where the name of the handsome Victorian mansion at the corner of Bells Mill Road and Germantown Avenue, Chestnut Hill, originated. Charles Knox Smith (1845-1916), a prominent Philadelphia businessman (oil brokerage and gold and silver mining in Mexico) and member of the Philadelphia Common Council (before it became City Council) acquired the house and grounds in 1901. Built sometime before 1867, it was already called “Woodmere” and the name stuck. Smith was the fourth owner. He was living in the city’s Kensington neighborhood at the time, but he was rapidly outgrowing his space. He had become interested in art and art collecting and his collection was growing.

It’s not surprising then to learn Smith added an art gallery during his first year in his new home and, a few years later, a second larger gallery with a balcony. Smith had developed a “good eye” for buying art and with help of some friends he began to show up at estate sales and art auctions. Soon the walls (and floor space) in his two galleries were crammed full of paintings and sculpture. The works were displayed in the manner of the times in “salon fashion” frame to frame and floor to ceiling.

Smith believed that creating a public art gallery (museum) would be beneficial to the culture of his community (greater Philadelphia) and stated in his will that his Woodmere property should be used in this way. Most major American cities already art museums, but it would be 12 years after Smith’s death before construction began on the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

In 1940, the Art Associations of Germantown and Chestnut Hill were granted the property to be used as their meeting place and an art gallery to display Smith’s collection and other works. Fast forward nearly 40 years. In 1978, the Woodmere Board of Trustees voted to join the American Association on Museums (AAM), the national accreditation organization and to undertake changes and improvements needed to qualify for accreditation. It became fully accredited in 1985. Over the years numerous changes and improvements have been made to Charles Knox Smith’s Victorian mansion that became Chestnut Hill’s much loved Woodmere Art Museum, but much of its original character has been retained for the enjoyment of all.

This Spring visitors will be able to visit Woodmere, the mansion turned art museum, and see some of the most important works from Smith’s personal collection. The Founder’s Gallery and Parlor Gallery, rooms largely unchanged from the Smith era, will feature distinguished landscape painting from his personal collection. These include an exquisite painting by Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900), Sunset in the Berkshire Hills, 1857. Church was a highly acclaimed member of the Hudson River School of American painters. Also, on exhibit is The Spirit of Peace, 1851, by Jasper Francis Cropsey (1826-1900) also of the Hudson River School. This painting has a twin from Cropsey, The Spirit of War, in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

From April 3 through June 26 and exhibit titled Pennsylvania Impressionism and Landscape: From the Collection of Woodmere Art Museum and the Promised Gift of Dr. Dorothy J. del Bueno will be presented in the Kuch and Balcony Galleries.

Since the 1940s, Woodmere has exhibited and collected the work of Pennsylvania Impressionists. Since that time, the collection has deepened and broadened through many important and generous gifts. This exhibition showcases the recently promised gift of the collection of Dr. Dorothy J. del Bueno which includes works by William L. Lathrop, Alice Kent Stoddard, Martha Walters, and Ethel Ashton. Integrated with Woodmere’s holdings, this incredible gift adds depth and scope to Woodmere’s permanent collection.

Among the fine paintings to be seen is the work Country Hill by Pennsylvania Impressionist painter Walter Schofield (1867-1944) and a recent acquisition, the gift of Marguerite and H. F. Lenfest, titled Winter by acclaimed Philadelphia artist Antonio Martino (1902-1988). Concurrent with these exhibits will be shows of works by renowned Chestnut Hill artist Violet Oakley and Lancaster, Pennsylvania’s Charles Demuth.

Our Collection: Frederic Edwin Church

Frederic Edwin Church was perhaps the best-known representative of the Hudson River School of landscape painting. Born in Hartford in 1826, he was the privileged son of Joseph Church, a jeweler and banker of that city, who interceded with Connecticut scion and collector Daniel Wadsworth to persuade the landscape painter Thomas Cole to accept his son as a pupil. From 1844 to 1846, Church studied with Cole in his Catskill, New York, studio and accompanied him on sketching sojourns in the Catskill Mountains and the Berkshires of Massachusetts. At one point, the master characterized the student as having "the finest eye for drawing in the world."

Following his term with Cole, Church established a studio in New York City and quickly seized a reputation, less for the allegorical landscapes that had distinguished Cole's output, than for expansive New York and New England views that synthesized sketches of varying locales into vivid compositions. In 1857, however, Church leapt to nationwide and even international prominence with his seven-foot-wide picture Niagara (Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.), which stunned spectators in New York and in Great Britain (where it was shown in 1857 and 1858) with its combination of breadth and uncanny verisimilitude.

In Woodmere Art Museum’s collection is Church’s Sunset in the Berkshire Hills, 1857, oil on canvas. Part of the original collection of Woodmere’s founder Charles Knox Smith, Sunset in the Berkshire Hills remains one of Woodmere’s treasures.

In this class models are dressed in contemporary clothing and arranged in naturalistic poses in the studio. Students are encouraged to observe the gesture and tones of the figure in the setting, and create a composition that incorporates drapery (the clothing) and some surrounding details. The instructor’s medium is oil paint, but students can work in the drawing or painting medium of their choice. (Beginners start with drawing in charcoal).

This class focuses on painting the figure alla prima (direct wet into wet). You’ll learn a variety of techniques used to create a fresh, spontaneous response to your subject. After an initial demonstration, students will work on their own by applying paint in large tonal patches and refining/adding details as the painting progresses. This class is particularly helpful to students who wish to paint more loosely, use brush strokes economically and take advantage of the inherent beauty of wet oil paint. Students of all levels are welcome.

New Exhibitions at Woodmere!

PHILADELPHIA – Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia’s premier institution for interpreting the art and culture of the Philadelphia region, announces the opening of five new exhibitions on Sunday, April 3 alongside a full calendar of engaging programs, including a Friday evening jazz series in April, children’s activities, and lectures. The museum will also introduce new visiting hours including extended evening and weekend hours, beginning April 3.

New museum hours (as of April 3) are: Tuesday through Thursday 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Friday 10:00 a.m.–8:45 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m., and Sunday 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Woodmere is located at 9201 Germantown Avenue in the historic cobblestoned Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia. Woodmere Art Museum will present two exhibitions in conjunction with the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA) – Charles Demuth in the City of Lights, which explores the work of one of America’s greatest modernists, and Violet Oakley and the Women Artists of Paris, which offers an intimate look at the Philadelphia/Mt. Airy illustrator, muralist, and stained glass artist.

Visitors to Woodmere will also gain a fresh perspective on the museum through three new exhibitions showcasing objects from the permanent collection, including an exhibition of Impressionist and landscape paintings of Pennsylvania, a second exhibition exploring the murals of Violet Oakley (on view for the first time since receiving conservation work), and an exhibition of objects from the personal collection of museum founder Charles Knox Smith.

An overview of each exhibition is provided below. In addition to these exhibitions, Woodmere will offer family programming, a Jazz music series, lectures and gallery talks, specialty tours, instructional art classes and workshops, and other special events.

William R. Valerio, who was appointed as the Patricia Van Burgh Allison Director and CEO of Woodmere Art Museum in September 2010, has placed more of Woodmere’s permanent collection on public view than ever before. Valerio came to Woodmere from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where he served as Assistant Director for Administration.

Woodmere recently renovated the grand Kuch Gallery, the rotunda-like space which houses major exhibitions, as well as the Founders Gallery and Parlor Gallery. In the coming year, Woodmere will continue to improve the museum interior and outdoor landscape.

Woodmere Art Museum staff members, alongside Valerio, collaboratively curated all of the new exhibitions opening this Spring, with the exception of Charles Demuth in the City of Lights which is guest curated by Anne Lampe, the Executive Director of The Demuth Museum.

Valerio is committed to Woodmere's partnership with the architects Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, who have maintained a long-standing, positive relationship with the Museum. Among Valerio's first priorities is to create a long range plan for Woodmere that will assess deferred maintenance and the Museum's facility needs. Since 1958, Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates has helped to shape the course of contemporary architecture and planning. From innovation in contextual design to the use of symbolism and iconography, VSBA's work has helped to expand concepts of what architecture can be. This focus makes them an ideal partner for Woodmere.

William Valerio says, "I am honored to become the Patricia Van Burgh Allison Director and CEO of Woodmere, which is a jewel among the many great cultural institutions of Philadelphia. With almost 20 years experience in museums Valerio is an ideal candidate to fill this role at Woodmere Art Museum. Most recently Valerio served as the Assistant Director for Administration for the Philadelphia Museum of Art where he was instrumental in government relations, advocacy, and public funding responsibilities, working with the Museum's Director, President, and Trustees to build relationships with elected officials of the City of Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the Federal Government. Valerio was also integral in fund raising and grant writing to generate support for capital projects, operations and programming. Gail Harrity, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, recognized Valerio's talents and recruited him to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Harrity, says, "Bill possesses a unique combination of skills that will serve Woodmere extraordinarily well, ranging from expertise as an art historian to business and government affairs. His energy and warmth will be much missed at the Museum where he has made a great contribution over the last six years."

Valerio's educational degrees are prestigious: MBA in Marketing and Strategic Management from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School in 2004; Ph.D. in Art History, specializing in European Modernism, from Yale University in 1996; MA in History of Art with a 17th-century specialization from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987; Bachelor of Arts from Williams College in 1985. He is also a fellow of the American Academy in Rome. Valerio curated his first exhibitions at the Yale University Art Gallery as a graduate student in 1988, and joined the Queens Museum of Art as Curator in 1997. He also taught at New York University, has written for Art in America, and worked as an Independent Curator and Consultant prior to joining the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Valerio is also an active community member sitting on the Host Committee for Powershift Philadelphia and is also a Co-Chair from 2009-present and Board of Directors, Philagrafika, 2006-present.

Our eyes are tactile organs. We trace form, the feel of what we see; we see and remember. Thorstensen’s work takes an unmediated leap from vision to print. Traditional printmaking - intaglio, lithography and silkscreen - marry seamlessly in layer upon layer, attesting to external and internal reflections, to the duality of body and mind. Ultimately, Thorstensen uses printmaking technology as a tool, not unlike a brush on canvas, to create work that records the splendor around us as well as the uncertainty of our existence.

Contemporary Painting: Focus on Figuration

This three-part series looks at contemporary painting with a focus on figuration. Beginning with the traditions established by the French Academy, we’ll examine the way modern painters such as Cezanne, Matisse, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Rodin and others have stepped away from the academic to find new and modern ways of presenting the figure. Our discussion will then move onto contemporary artists who continue to work in and push the boundaries of the figurative tradition: John Currin, Jenny Saville, and Elizabeth Peyton. In the wake of Abstract Expressionism, a number of painters developed strategies that both extended the life of painting while at the same time pointed to its possible demise. This class will look at a number of those artists including: Jasper Johns and his paintings of flags and targets; Robert Rauschenberg who fused Duchamp's readymades with notions of abstraction; and Frank Stella who created paintings with programmatic arrangements of lines that radiated outward to determine the overall shape of the canvas.

Philadelphia, PA (September 1, 2009) --- After 28 years of distinguished service, Dr. Michael W. Schantz, Director and Chief Executive Officer of Woodmere Art Museum, has announced he will step down from his position, effective December 31, 2009.

The Board of Trustees will begin a search for his successor.

Under Dr. Schantz’s leadership – one of the longest of any museum director in the region – the Woodmere Art Museum transformed itself from a largely volunteer-run art center into a professionally managed, vital, community-based fine art museum. During Dr. Schantz’s tenure, Woodmere emerged as the region’s only museum dedicated exclusively to Philadelphia artists.

“Michael has done a fabulous job for Woodmere, and, in many ways, Woodmere is Michael Schantz,” said Board president Dianne Meyer. “We will miss him.”

“Having spent nearly three decades at the Woodmere, the decision to step down was not one made lightly,” Dr. Schantz said. “But with the groundwork laid and the Museum poised to begin an important new chapter, this is an opportune time to pass the reins to the Museum’s next leader. The Museum is in capable hands with the stewardship of the Board and the professionalism of the employees.”

While at the Woodmere, Dr. Schantz was responsible for a number of important projects, including:
•    Woodmere’s first designation in 1984 as a museum accredited by the American Association of Museums (AAM), a distinction it has maintained ever since.
•    The successful navigation of multiple AAM assessments, including Conservation, Public Dimension, and Governance, an accomplishment achieved by few other museums.
•    Woodmere’s selection as a Pew Charitable Trusts Philadelphia Cultural Leadership Program Award winner for 2008, placing it among the region’s most accomplished institutions both programmatically and operationally.
•    The addition of more than 2000 works of art to the Museum’s permanent collection.
•    Curating and / or organizing more than 100 temporary exhibitions, underscoring Woodmere’s reputation for dedication to the artists of Philadelphia, past and present.

Perhaps most public was Dr. Schantz’s leadership in helping to develop and implement a multi- phase physical facility master plan. The plan involved the successful transformation of Woodmere’s distinctive and historic Victorian mansion into a modern ADA-compliant museum.

The third and final phase of that plan involves the building of a major addition designed by world-renowned architects Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. The new addition will include a public auditorium, an exhibition hall, and a new museum store, as well as critically needed collection and archival support areas.

Art of the Story: Narrative Paintings

Narrative paintings tell stories drawn from history, mythology, literature, allegory, and everyday life. Narrative paintings are as old as art itself and often involve complex figurative arrangements that make apparent to the viewer the particular story to be told or virtue to be illustrated. Come see and investigate narrative works from Woodmere’s permanent collection in this modest tribute to some masters of storytelling. Some of the artists included are: Benjamin West, N.C. and Wyeth, Frederick James.

Narrative art is art that tells a story. Much of Western art has been narrative, depicting stories from religion, myth and legend, history and literature. To tell a story, to describe an action, to create memorable characters and recall legendary events was once for painters one of the fundamental tasks to which the artistic imagination addressed itself.

Narrative paintings that describe important events or subject matter from the Bible or classical mythology were termed History Painting by French Royal Academy in the seventeenth century. Intended to describe the most important type of painting, history painting was at the top while the other types of paintings in descending order were portrait, genre (scenes of everyday life), landscape, and still life. By the end of the eighteenth century, modern historical subjects were introduced by artists like Benjamin West. He brought a new theme to narrative painting – an introduction of contemporary events into the acceptable repertoire of history painting.

Popular from about the seventeenth century are narrative paintings or genre paintings that show scenes of everyday life. These works often involve complex figurative arrangements that make apparent the particular story to be told or virtue to be illustrated. The work, Fair Near Strasbourg-Alsace by Christian Schussele is a good example.

In modern art, formalist ideas frowned upon the narrative in artwork. However, coded references to political or social issues or to events in the artist's life are commonplace in modern art. Such works are effectively modern allegories, and generally require information from the artist to be fully understood. Representing this approach to narrative are works of Sidney Goodman and Allan Freelon.

On view are works from Woodmere’s Permanent Collection which reflect examples of all these styles of narrative, including: the history paintings of Benjamin West and Johann Geyer, the modern allegories of Sidney Goodman and Allan Freelon, the personal narratives of Sarah McEneaney, and the genre paintings of Frederick James. Present in all these narrative works are the implication of action. Something has just happened or is about to happen. The scenes presented are frozen in time, with the viewer challenged to piece the story together from carefully constructed compositions. It is the pleasurable discovery of the story and the skill with which the narratives are visually illustrated that make these works
so satisfying.

Contemporary Voices: 70th Annual Juried Exhibition

Woodmere Art Museum’s mission to support the arts of Philadelphia is realized, in part, through its annual Juried Exhibition. This, our 70th juried show, highlights a wide variety of contemporary artists in Philadelphia. Our juror, Michael Schantz, the out-going CEO and Director of Woodmere, selected 125 works by 112 artists out of a pool of over 400. A juror, selected as an expert in the arts, reviews all the submissions and decides who is in the exhibit and who is not. Michael has a strong passion for the arts. He has spent decades viewing art, mounting contemporary exhibitions, and immersing himself in the Philadelphia arts community.

Artists have not always been eager to have their work seen and evaluated either by a professional jury or by the public. For several centuries, artists were primarily concerned with pleasing their patrons. Exhibitions, so common an occurrence in today’s world, are actually a fairly new phenomenon and juried exhibitions, even more so. The first juried exhibition was held at the French Academy in the 1730s. Judged by academics, only a select few works were allowed in. The public had a...
taste for such things and juried shows began to become more popular, and grew into what would be called the Salon. The rise in amateurism in the early 1800’s led to increased numbers of people entering juried shows.

Perhaps one of the greatest values of any public display of art, juried or not, is that it invites people to judge and evaluate the objects on view. We each confront our own inner boundaries and definitions of art every time we see new forms of expression. In the course of looking and questioning we challenge our own assumptions about art and occasionally emerge with a new perspective on the nature of art. “Contemporary Voices: 70th Annual Juried Exhibition” gives artists and lay persons alike the opportunity to consider their own standards of judgment as they confront the diversity of the art in the region

Analyzing a work of art is a captivating experience. It can engage our senses and our intellect. As you explore the works think about formal issues that affect your relationship to the work. What are the characteristics of the works before you? What nouns and adjectives apply? Meditative, bold, complex, nuanced, self-consciousness, playful… Is the art concerned about discovery rather than retracing the known? Is it about abstraction or about figuration? What elements jump out at you?

This year’s works use a wide variety of media and explore a great deal of subject matter. Some common threads present in the exhibition include: Philadelphia’s figurative tradition, the use of personal narrative or allegory, the landscape tradition, realism, and abstraction.
